What's the point of using a gem instead of installing the JS/CSS library files into the vendor for Rails asset pipeline ?

Is it just for the sake of simplicity ? Please give me some clues folks.

I don't like adding third party code in my own codebase. Even in a vendor folder.

Also what do you think of https://github.com/rharriso/bower-rails ? Cause I've been told that rails assets is shutting down soon.

Versioning is also a good reason, it's likely you don't want to manually handle the changes in the JS/CSS code you've copied

Rails assets is not going away anytime soon, it's changed ownership recently and now the guys at Tenex are supporting it (hosting and maintenance). You can read the full story if you want.
